Vice Minister Wang Shouwen Attends the 7th Asia-Europe Economic Ministers Meeting
On September 22, 2017, the 7th Asia-Europe Economic Ministers Meeting was held in Seoul, Korea. Vice Minister of Commerce Wang Shouwen attended this meeting on behalf of Minister Zhong Shan. The Presidential Statement, the Ministerial Statement on Supporting Multilateral Trade System and the Seoul Proposal on the Fourth Industrial Revolution were released at the meeting.
Wang Shouwen was invited to deliver a speech on strengthening the economic interconnectivity between Asia and Europe. Wang pointed out that President Xi Jinping comprehensively explained “the Silk Road Spirit” and the “Five Focuses” at the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation and the decision on “promoting the interconnectivity in all directions” was made in the ASEM Summit. The Asia-Europe Economic Ministers Meeting should positively contribute to the interconnectivity construction, making it a new engine for the trade and economic development and regional integration of Asia and Europe. China has launched effective cooperation with Asian and European countries through the 16+1 cooperation in the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative. China hopes to continue to build the transportation infrastructure that connects Asia and Europe, strengthen e-commerce cooperation and discuss the FTA construction and the Model E-Port Network cooperation among member countries with the concerted efforts of Asian and European countries.
Wang expressed that all sides should further consolidate the multilateral trade system’s role as the main channel by ensuring the effectiveness and authority of the multilateral trade system and opposing trade and investment protectionism. China calls for the Asian and European countries to set examples of implementing the Trade Facilitation Agreement of WTO by supporting the discussion of new topics such as e-commerce and investment facilitation so as to jointly promote the achievements of the 11th WTO ministerial meeting to be held at the end of this year. China supports the updating of Asia-Europe Trade Facilitation Action Plan and Asia-Europe Investment Promotion Action Plan to adapt to the new trend and requirement of Asia-Europe facilitation cooperation.
Wang also invited the members of Asia-Europe Meeting to participate in the China International Import Expo in November 2018. This Expo will be conducive to promoting global trade and the trade facilitation of Asia and Europe, especially the countries along the “Belt and Road.”
The Asia-Europe trade and economic cooperation is one of the “three pillars” of Asia-Europe Meeting and six Asia-Europe Economic Ministers’ Meetings have been held before the suspension in 2005 for some reasons. In 2014, Premier Li Keqiang suggested to restart the Asia-Europe Economic Ministers’ Meeting in the 10th ASEM Summit. In 2016, restarting the Asia-Europe Economic Ministers Meeting was officially decided at the 11th ASEM Summit. This is the first meeting held after since then
